Having good security is an all-year-round responsibility. But, businesses may be especially vulnerable during the winter months.
Darker nights, adverse weather conditions and holidays make this a particularly perilous time. However, by taking the right steps and enlisting the help of a professional security service you can significantly reduce the threat of crime. Read on to find out more…
1. Review Your External Lighting
With the nights being longer, colder and darker, effective security lighting is a necessity. Security lighting on a sensor will illuminate the exterior of your property if movement is detected. As well as acting as a deterrent to criminal activity, efficient lighting can improve the effectiveness of CCTV.
Ensure the cameras themselves are also weatherproof. Heavy rain, high winds and even snow can all impact on the effectiveness of your CCTV. Now the clocks have gone back, it’s also important to update the time settings on your cameras. Incorrect timestamps could lead to recordings being inadmissible in court, so ensure they’re correct.
2. Lock up securely for the night
It’s cold outside. There’s a log fire awaiting you when you get home. But don’t use this as an excuse to take shortcuts with your security checks. Ensure all doors and windows are locked securely and the alarm activated correctly. It may seem a good idea to save five minutes by not thoroughly checking the premises before leaving, but the costs could be expensive. If you want 100% peace of mind, consider asking your security provider to secure and unlock your business premises for you. Having a professional lock up at the end of the day means you can rest assured that the job will be done correctly.
3. Check perimeter fencing and locks
With adverse weather comes the potential for damage to your property. High winds can damage or even flatten perimeter security fencing, providing an easy access point or escape route for criminals. Easier to repair during periods of good weather, pre-planning can keep you secure. Also, check for any debris around the perimeter which can be used to gain entry to your premises.
4. Check business premises during the winter holiday season
While your staff are away on holiday, potential burglars are sensing an opportunity. A visible camera and working alarm system will help deter criminals, but regularly checking the site can alert you to any warning signs of a planned attack. If you don’t want to be alone on site, you can choose mobile security patrols from Abbey Security. We’ll undertake routine patrols during the holiday season, so you don’t have to.
