Crime Statistics in East Anglia 2018

Police figures released in October last year stated that in the 12 months up to June, recorded crime in the UK increased by 13%. Violent crime increased by 19%.

It is also well-known that police numbers are falling. All of which highlights the need for effective security to protect your business, assets and people in 2018.

To show the levels of crime in your area, we’ve compared the crime statistics from some of East Anglia’s biggest towns and cities… *

Bury St Edmunds

Abbey Security has been based in Bury St Edmunds since 1985

Well known for its Abbey gardens and the ruins of the 11th century Benedictine monastery found within them, Bury is a tourist hotspot and the cultural and retail centre for West Suffolk.

According to figures from Suffolk Constabulary, there were 5,424 crimes recorded in Bury St Edmunds and the surrounding areas between December 2016 and November 2017.

Of the crimes recorded, there were 1,570 violent and sexual offences, 1,058 complaints of anti-social behaviour, 631 counts of arson and criminal damage and 284 burglaries.

Abbey Security Services Ltd has supplied officers to businesses in Cambridge for over 30 years

In Cambridge – East Anglia’s 5th most inhabited settlement – crime numbers reached 5,158 (although 22% of this was made up of bicycle thefts). With the recent announcement that Parkside Police Station will close within 5 years and a new location on the outskirts of the city currently being sourced, policing in the city looks set to change enormously over the next few years.

Known as Silicon Fen, Cambridge is home to the technology businesses, ARM Holdings, AVEVA Group and Jagex. The famous science park to the north of the city centre is a concentration of science and research related businesses. Last year Abbey Security celebrated our 20th anniversary of supporting Cambridge Science Park. In that time, we have maintained a presence of three trained officers for an estimated 175,000 man hours!

We provide keyholding and other security services to a number of companies in Thetford

Located between Norwich and London, Thetford is well-known for its forest and historic town centre. Over the past 12 months, there have been 3,248 crimes recorded. 32% of which were for anti-social behaviour, 26.75% violence and sexual offences and 10.22% criminal damage and arson.

The home of horse racing, Newmarket is Suffolk’s sixth most populous town. With 2,131 reported crimes in the 12 months up to November 2017, Newmarket is one of the safer towns in East Anglia. Of the crimes recorded, 502 (23.56%) were violent or sexual offences.

Afforded city status thanks to its beautiful cathedral, Ely is nevertheless one of the smallest cities by population in the UK. Last year, there were 1,704 recorded crimes in the city, including 499 counts of anti-social behaviour and 296 violent and sexual offences.

One of England’s oldest – and Suffolk’s biggest – town, Ipswich is home to the University of Suffolk and the extensively modernised waterfront area. Home to big businesses such as AXA Insurance, Ransomes Jacobsen Limited and the insurance broker Willis Limited, Ipswich is a thriving area for industry. With only 1 incident of crime per for every 18 residents, it’s also a relatively safe area. In the last 12 months, there were 7,283 reported crimes, including 1030 counts of shoplifting and 709 counts of criminal damage and arson.
